Meanwhile, her husband, Professor Gideon, creates wonders to sell to more fortunate worlds as well as new machines that will keep Katherine and their people safe and ease their daily lives. However, as dangerous as their realm has always been, movement in other realms has brought new threats. Something prowled out of the void, angry and hungry and hateful of anything that smelled of progress and hope.

It slunk through the dark forests until it came to the borders of the Corvus lands. There, the hungry void saw the manor, shining with the physical light of bright aether powered lanterns and the glow of hope in the strength of the Professor and Lady Corvus to protect the people and provide better lives. It hated but was cautious, so it chased a werewolf onto the lands to test the defenses. The werewolf reached the outer pastures, managing to feed on some sheep before Lady Corvus found its tracks. Raising the alarm, she directed her people into the safety of their homes before hunting it.

Cornering it, Lady Corvus dispatched it quickly with the explosive silver tipped bolts from her steam enhanced crossbow, one of Professor Corvus’ many inventions. The void hissed in anger as the people celebrated the destruction of the threat. That night was a new moon and the void hunger slid in through the shadows, consuming the lights of the outlying houses, bringing a cold that invaded the dreams of the people sleeping there. It slithered to the manor only to find Lady Corvus standing in the doorway, crossbow at the ready. Behind her, Professor Corvus rushed back and forth across the entry hall, stringing together wires and strange machines.

Lady Corvus did not ask the creature’s name or purpose but only gave it one warning. “These lands and these people are mine and I protect what is mine.” No offer of surrender or demand to leave was uttered. Lady Corvus took aim, holding still and steady as the hall behind her filled with arcs of electricity and strange misty energies before Professor Corvus called out that it was ready. The bolt was fired true, dragging the attached wires deep into the void’s body, filling it with bright energies that burned out of its shadow skin until it was burned away in a small sun that then faded into the night. Lady Katherine and Professor Gideon Corvus stared out over their lands as the lights came back on, ensuring their realm was once again safe.

Unknown to them until that moment, the Realm Keeper had been pursuing the creature of the void and had witnessed the battle. Seeing their innovation, hope and willingness to fight for a better future, the Realm Keeper chose them to be champions of the Steampunk realms.
